Stage and Screen Combat: Acting the Fight

A one-day workshop taught in-person at our Howard Fine Acting Studio in Los Angeles by Roberta Brown!
(This class is a pre-requisite for the Fight Reel Workshop Weekend.)

Learn how to safely perform a story through punches, kicks, slaps, falls, and other fight moves. We will work through ways of approaching common combat moves for stage and for screen, keeping them believable and safe. Then we will put those moves in context, with an acting challenge.

Later in the year, we plan to do a weekend-long fight reel workshop, and taking Acting the Fight twice will be a prerequisite to participate.

Feel free to bring any specific questions about moves you would like to figure out and we will try to cover as many as time allows.

Roberta Brown is a fight director and sword master, whose screen credits include Charlie's Angels, Boudica, Warrior Queen, ER, Queen of Swords, Holes, The District, and The Hunted. Some highlights of her stage fight direction include Macbeth at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, Oman, Oh Man! with director/choreographer Debbie Allen at the Kennedy Center, the US premiere of the Original Pronunciation Hamlet at Nevada Repertory Company, and Howard Fine’s Los Angeles premiere of Fortinbras. Roberta was fight director for Shakespeare in Styria and the European Shakespeare Days, and Artistic Director for Austria's Shakespeare in the Park. She teaches stage combat at Vienna's English Theatre Academy and Sunrise Studios in Vienna. Some actors she’s enjoyed arming include Patricia Arquette, Alex Kingston, Emily Blunt, Noah Wylie, Bo Derek, and Thomas Kretschmann.

ALL STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO OBTAIN A COPY OF BOTH HOWARD’S BOOK, FINE ON ACTING: A VISION OF THE CRAFT, AND UTA HAGEN’S A CHALLENGE FOR THE ACTOR. BOTH THESE BOOKS ARE REQUIRED READING FOR THE 6-WEEK ACTING TECHNIQUE CLASSES EXCEPT FOR YOUTH STUDENTS.

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL SCHEDULED CLASSES.

UPON RECEIPT OF PAYMENT, PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION E-MAIL WITH A RECEIPT. ANOTHER WELCOME EMAIL WILL BE SENT CLOSER TO THE START DATE WITH INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS, ASSIGNMENTS, AND OTHER DETAILS.
